Whether prospective tenants come from abroad or the UK, you need to check references thoroughly. But, as Jo Russell finds out, this can be easier said than done.

The thought of a vacant property might persuade some landlords that any tenant is better than none at all. But this could prove to be a high-risk strategy. The seemingly amiable person you meet at interview could morph into the tenant from hell, who defaults on rent, takes little or no care over the state of the property, and then refuses to leave.
